The Ward 3 seat on the Louisville Board of Aldermen has been taken by candidate Steven Hampton as a result of the special election runoff held on Tuesday, March 26. Hampton garnered 160 votes to the 113 votes for opponent Charles Mays, according to unofficial results. The pair tied in the initial special election held on March 5.
Initially, four candidates vied for the seat left open when long-time Alderwoman Gwenita Mays resigned in December. Mays successfully campaigned for the position of Winston County Circuit Clerk. Gwenita held that seat in Ward 3 for nearly two decades.
The Winston County Election Commission met at 9:00 AM Wednesday morning to certify the votes. There were 236 in-person votes and 31 absentee/affidavit ballots. More than 1,000 eligible voters reside in Ward 3. A total of 278 people voted.
In comparison, approximately 220 people voted in the special election held earlier this month. City Hall was open at least two Saturdays from 8:00 AM until noon in an attempt to encourage voter turnout and provide an opportunity for absentee voters to participate.
Hampton’s swearing in is scheduled for 5:00 PM Tuesday, April 2, prior to the Board of Alderman.
