Since springtime is here, we decided to read a story about planting Friday at the Maben Public Library.
We read "Tops and Bottoms" by Janet Stevens. This story is about a bear who is kind of lazy but has lots of money and land. His neighbor, the hare, has no money
and no land and his family is hungry.
He comes up with a plan to feed his family. First he tells Bear he has an idea to become business partners. He wanted to plant Bear's land and asks Bear which does he want, tops or bottoms. Bear wants the tops, so Hare planted carrots, beets and radishes. He and his family worked really hard while Bear slept.
Then time to harvest came and Hare gave Bear all the tops. Bear knew he was tricked so he told Hare to plant again
and this time he wanted the bottoms. So Hare planted lettuce, broccoli and celery. When harvest time came, he gave Bear the bottoms.
Bear had been tricked again so this time he wanted Hare to plant again and he wanted tops and bottoms. So Hare planted corn and gave Bear tops and bottoms. Bear was so upset, he decided to plant his own crops and never slept through a planting season again.
The children colored, cut and glued pictures of the vegetables and placed them on a paper plate marked tops and bottoms.
After that we went outside and planted our own vegetables from seeds. We planted tomatoes, beets, carrots, beans and radishes. Hopefully some of them will come up. Join us this week as we celebrate our mothers and plant flowers.
Friday we had Tyler Kay Bates, Elisheva, Ian and Seth Barrett, Lin Ladner-Henson, Trae Tenhet and Maia Maccree.
