Last weekend, Winston County commemorated the tenth anniversary of the April 28, 2014 tornado that wreaked havoc and devastated multiple areas of the county. While local officials have held anniversary ceremonies throughout the years, leadership determined that the tenth anniversary would be especially dedicated to the ten citizens who lost their lives as a result of the catastrophic natural disaster.
The weekend of remembrance was kicked off with a laying of wreaths at the Winston County Courthouse and at the monument at the intersection of South Columbus and East Main Street.
Chief Robert Hutto of the Louisville Fire Department was charged with the logistics of this somber ceremony. Members of first responder groups from across the state and county were involved in the event, including Mississippi Highway Patrol, volunteer firefighters/first responders from across the county, E-911 operators, members of the Louisville Police Department, and Louisville’s Public Safety director.
All parties met at the Courthouse at 10:00 AM for the ceremony. The Louisville Garden Club sponsored the wreath which stood in front of the Courthouse, while the Town and Country Garden Club sponsored the wreath placed on the monument on Main.
