Ah, the very best month in the calendar. Yes, it’s my birthday month... When is yours? I tend to celebrate all month, you?
After the March on Washington number one and now 60 years later, I got to thinking about accomplishments. What has the human community accomplished that says I love you; I respect you even more? See even Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., after his famous 'Dream Speech' further said that tolerance and decency were not enough, equality was still in the waiting. Have we made any accomplishments in this area? Leontyne Price, African American opera singer reminds us, "accomplishments have no color."
Betty Ford said this, "You never know what you can do until you have to do it." You might remember her establishing a clinic for substance abuse? How difficult was this? How difficult is it every day for abusers and addicts to accomplish sobriety?
In the Little League World Series, California wins US title and played against the Caribbean, the international champ, serious accomplishments for these young boys (there was only one girl this year in the tourney).
Oh my. Something they will remember forever. Then there's the US Open, or the PGA, or USA in Basketball World Cup, what helps folks accomplish things? Must be practice and hard work?
There is an African proverb helping me in my place..."whatever accomplishment you boast of in the world, there is someone better than you." Maybe your accomplishments are academic, or athletic, or even spiritual? Maybe you, like Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's, started a business? He said, "I liked to make money, but money wasn't the only thing. It was also the sense of accomplishment." Someone else, however, has come out ahead of you, and for that be grateful and rejoice in your accomplishments and in theirs!
Happy Labor Day!
BLESSINGS.
