The staff of the Family Center informed parents/guardians, students and other participants of the community to be aware of the importance of exercising wellness. One measure taken to achieve this goal is the Center’s Annual Health Fair which was hosted on April 26, 2022. The Health Fair is an excellent way of implementing the practice of good health and prevention of diseases. Many also learned about the importance of nutrition, exercise, and an annual physical examination.
Belinda Swart, Assist. Superintendent and Federal Programs Director, and Evg. Barbra Eichelberger, Parent Liaison, exclaimed a secondary goal of the Health Fair was to make parents/ guardians be aware of an understanding of the direct relationship in making nutritious food choices, getting adequate sleep, and proper exercis4e which helps to contribute to student success in academic education. This hopefully will make a positive impact on making healthy choices. Applying the knowledge with practice will ensure great health and mental stability that will aid in lifelong success.
The community came together to make the Health Fair possible and it was successful. Local organizations had booths for cholesterol screenings, blood glucose checks, blood pressure checks, and eye pressure checks. Volunteers for the health team were: Wendy Wall, MLS; Coysheena Mitchell, LPN; Victoria Cassell, Technician; Diana Phillips, CPO; and Kaitlyn Warren, CPO.
Other booths included volunteer Glendia Cooper, Prolific Potter, had her amazing captivating earthenware clay pieces on display. She told how using pottery contributes to good health benefits. Evg. Barbra Eichelberger had a booth set up for all the services and programs offered in the Family Center. There was an EXCEL by 5 booth. This booth gave information as an innovative early childhood community certification process focusing on the community’s young children. It emphasizes the important roles parents and early childhood educators play in the lives of children during their most formative years- birth to 5. The purpose is to engage communities to help give every child a chance to live up to his or her potential. This makes a positive difference in children’s lives and it makes a positive difference in the future of communities. Dr. Lakichia Jernigan, Behavior Specialist and Certified Manager, provided the EXCEL by 5 information.
Some teachers and their students were excited to observe the Health Fair. This was a learning experience for the students. They received hands-on information and ultimately insight into a variety of careers from the volunteers.
