A year ago, the American Legion Post 82 began their work to have a memorial plaza built next to the World War I and II monument at the courthouse.
They began to work, reaching out to Rep. Joey Hood and Senator Bart Williams, the Choctaw County Supervisors, and the Towns of Ackerman, Weir and French Camp.
A year later, the American Legions work has gone from conception to reality as many gathered to hold a dedication service on Friday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. Although it was drizzling and dreary, it was vibrant and full of life and thanks inside of the Choctaw County Courthouse.
“We are very thankful to everyone who contributed in this,” Rev. Jerry Lawson, Commander of the American Legion Post 82 said. “When we went to the Supervisors, they jumped on board. Ackerman, Weir, French Camp no matter where we went, people jumped on board.”
Lawson said Chancery Clerk Steve Montgomery was a huge help, lending his services wherever he could.
“Steve told us if there’s anything you need just let me know,” Lawson said.
The speaker of the event was Rep. Joey Hood. Hood said to prepare for his speech, he did some research on the veterans in Choctaw County. He said right now, there were 412 and that number has been in decline. He said now is the perfect time to erect the plaza in honor of those who gave their life for the freedoms we experience in Choctaw County.
“It’s a daily reminder that we appreciate the work that they’ve done for the freedoms we have and how blessed we are,” Hood said.
He said not only residents of Choctaw County, but all over get to celebrate veterans and the scarifies they made for the greatest country in the world.
“On this Veteran’s Day, we have assembled here to dedicate this memorial addition. American Legion Post 82 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 82 deeply appreciate the generous financial support,” Lawson said. “May this memorial plaza inspire us to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before us and let it speak to those who came after us to treasure and defend the freedoms we enjoy here today.”
