The Kiwanis Club believes in making a difference in the community. On Friday, May 19, the club presented backpacks to all Fair Elementary second grade students. Six classes received the backpacks, which included four books. Each student received different books, but every backpack contained a Dr. Seuss bookmark and eraser as well as a handmade Kiwanis book.
Ms. Glendia Cooper, president of the Louisville chapter, said that this is the inaugural backpack and book gift to local children. The club also provided backpacks and books to second graders at Noxapater on Friday; children at Nanih Waiya were presented the same on Monday.
Cooper added that one of the primary goals of the local club is to provide materials to children prior to the 3rd grade reading test. During her remarks Friday, she told students present that the Club wants to make reading fun as well.
Research shows that students experience a “summer slide,” during which two months of reading skills could be lost. The backpack program is intended to prevent this and encourage a love of reading.
This service project is just one of twelve that the Kiwanis Club carries out yearly. The current Kiwanis Club was chartered in 2022 and currently has 25 members. The international club is one that helps to provide many opportunities for children around the world, including the construction of water wells and so much more.
