Joan Holloman, native of Maben, has done it again. She has taken a house in Maben that needed an upgrade and has transformed it into a charming cottage that she calls home.
It is located along Highway 15 between the Shuffield homeplace and the Harpole home. She chose to accent the repainted white home with dark gray shutters, the same color as the new roof.
Then she duplicated the color scheme in the little building out back that is used for storage, but looks like a guest house on the property.
For October color, she placed a wicker bench out front with a large, straw gardening hat, yard rake and shovel, a bright orange scarf and throw pillow across the back with an attractive wicker basket, decorative scarecrow doll, large pumpkin and sunflower container of goldenrod.
Finishing touches include the front door wreath and vine growing up the two front posts at the entryway. Joan chose to keep the established boxwood plants and cherry laurel across the front of her home.
There are established hydrangeas on the west side of the house, and new plantings of golden thuja, which looks a lot like cypress, and more cherry laurels all the way down the east side.
In the back around the "guest house" are large elephant ear plants and some ground cover leading up to the front door. To add color the building is accented with a sunflower and pumpkin flag flying from the east corner. Behind the carport is a patio area lined with pink double azaleas, which are still blooming.
A wall of ivy on the tall concrete storm shelter serves as a backdrop for the patio. Along the east property line is a row of established, mature nandinas with large clusters of berries that will turn red for Christmas.
The Maben Garden appreciates all the hard work and thoughtful planning that Joan has put into her efforts to make Maben more attractive.
