French Camp’s next Historical Highlight luncheon will be Thursday, January 11, 12:00pm at French Camp Presbyterian Church’s Living Stones Building. Local historian and genealogist, Margie Gilmer, will give a presentation about the French Camp Cemetery.
You may have lived in French Camp all your life, but how much do you know about our cemetery? How old is it? What major families are represented there? What notable people are buried there? These and many more questions about our local cemetery will be addressed.
Margie Gilmer retired to Choctaw County in 2003 and resides in Ackerman.
Since coming to Choctaw County she has been busy researching local history and compiling genealogies. She has done extensive research about area cemeteries, published 12 family genealogies, multiple family histories, and encourages people to take seriously the need to preserve family Bibles, birth and marriage records, funeral programs, obituaries and any other documentation that will help uncover the lives and histories of our predecessors here in Choctaw and surrounding counties.
The February 8 luncheon will feature "The Mecklin Collection," a group of books and documents written by or about those who have lived in French Camp. The collection is located in The Mecklin Room of French Camp Presbyterian Church's Living Stones Building.
Historical Highlight Luncheons feature a speaker who shares some aspect of French Camp's history and lunch for a $3 donation. The public is invited.
RSVP for the luncheon by contacting Mary Nell Coblentz at marynellcoblentz@gmail.com or 662-547-6520 (leave a message).
