Webster County’s unemployment rate decreased two-tenths of a percentage point during December, according to preliminary numbers from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
The county’s unemployment rate stood at 3.4% during December, compared to 3.6% in November (as adjusted) and the same rate in December 2021. This was the 26th lowest rate in the state and the lowest rate in the county since October’s 3.3%.
The number of unemployed Webster Countians in December decreased by 10 to an estimated 130. The labor force, which is made up of everyone who has a job or is looking for one, increased by 30 to an estimated 3,860.
MDES statistics from 1990 forward show the county’s highest unemployment rate for December was recorded in 2009, when it reached 15%. The lowest rate for that period was last year’s 3.4%. The 12-month moving average, and 2022 average, is 3.8%.
December jobless rates in adjoining counties: Calhoun, 4.1%; Chickasaw, 5%; Choctaw, 3.1%; Clay, 4.2%; Grenada, 3.3%; Montgomery, 3.9%; and Oktibbeha, 3.3%.
Mississippi’s unemployment rate for December was 3.4% while the national jobless rate was 3.3%, neither seasonally adjusted.
