Winston county has been awarded federal funds under the emergency food and shelter national board program. The county was allocated 6,935 from efsp and 21,435 from the american rescue plan act (arpa-r) to supplement emergency food and shelter needs. The selections was made by a national board that is chaired by the federal emergency management agency (fema) that consist of representatives from the american red cross, catholic charities usa, the jewish federation of north america, national council of the churches of christ in the usa, the salvation army and unitedway world wide.
The local board is charged to distribute the funds appropriated by congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
a local board made up of alderwoman gwanita mays, evangelist essie jackson glass, aline haynes, billy metts, b. J. Kelleghan, larry veazey, and michelle hunt will determine how the funds awarded to winston county are distributed to qualifying agencies.
Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:
(1) be private voluntary non-profits or unit of government
(2) be eligible to receive federal funds
(3) have an accounting system
(4) practice nondiscrimination
(5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
(6) if they are private voluntary organizations, they must have a voluntary board
Winston county has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with various winston county agencies participating. These agencies were responsible for providing meals, lodging, utility, rent, and mortgage assistance.
