After much prayerful consideration, the Board of Directors of Cornerstone Clinic has voted to close the facility’s doors. Years ago, members of the medical community and area churches saw a need for a free clinic in our area. Noting there were numerous people who were unable to afford health care, the founding members of Cornerstone worked hard to meet the needs of those individuals and ease their burdens. One of the few free clinics in Mississippi, Cornerstone has operated in Winston County since 1999.
Since opening over twenty-three years ago, Cornerstone Clinic has served thousands of patients at its current location on South Church Avenue. Services were offered to any resident of Winston County who did not have insurance or receive Medicaid. Operating solely on donations from individuals, churches, civic organizations, and local businesses the clinic was staffed by local volunteers. These individuals included physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses, clerical staff and janitors.
When the Covid-19 Pandemic hit the United States in March of 2020, services at the clinic were curtailed. Medical volunteers were working extra hours to cover the health care needs of our area in their respective positions. With the difficulty of scheduling providers along with the increase use of technology in medicine/medical records, the board has made the difficult decision to cease operations.
Due to the closing of the clinic, Cornerstone will no longer be accepting donations. The board would like to thank the community for its continued support since 1999. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the original board members who had a vision of a free clinic for our community and worked hard to achieve that mission. Many individuals were blessed by the services offered by Cornerstone Clinic through the years.
