Identical twins become medicine doctors are sons of local resident
No, you are not seeing double. Identical twins, Jeremy and Jermaine Hogstrom are 27 years old as they are about to complete their residency in Detroit, MI. During an interview with Mark Kennedy of the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the brothers said they have begun to look back on their lives with a sense of accomplishment. They, also, said they want to be an example to minorities and other students because many students may think that medical school is impossible for them.
The twins were born in Chattanooga, TN to local physical therapist and Louisville Municipal School District Board member, Jackie Steele and to PBS/KPTS president and CEO, Victor Hogstrom. They spent vacation time and holidays in Louisville with their mother and grandmother Dorothy Hardin-Steele but grew up mostly with their father in Chattanooga and Kansas City, MO.
The twins desired to become doctors at an early age after watching their mother as she rehabilitated her patients as a physical therapist. After high school, they attended and graduated from the University of TN-Chattanooga with degrees in biology and minors in chemistry. They were elated that both were accepted to study osteopathic medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at Auburn University. (VCOM-Auburn). They graduated from VCOM-Auburn in May 2019. Again, they were elated to be accepted for their medical residencies through the Detroit/Wayne County Health organization, working with patients at Sinai Grace Hospital which they started in July 2019.
Drs. Jeremy and Jermaine will complete their 3 year residency May 2022. It is possible that they will start a private practice together in osteopathic medicine but not confirmed to this writer’s knowledge yet. They have not just been ‘book worms’ they have played tennis, ping-pong, basketball and are accomplished pianist with black belts in Tae Kwon Do.
One writer wrote that they went from Black Belts to White Coats. They continue to play piano which releases stress for them, according to them in the interview with Mark Kennedy.
The Friends of Dean Park, Inc., who sponsors the Black History Exhibit at the Winston County Library yearly, chose to display the Hogstrom twins in the Black History Exhibit since the National Theme for Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness and since they have local family members. The exhibit will be in the library until February 28, 2022. Hours: M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. If you would like a guided 30 minute tour, please come between 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
