(Nov. 23) My topic from the Lighter Side this article comes from a group of women here.
I’m not going to tell their names or ages but added together we are 337 years old! These women are sharp; they may use walkers to get around but they are sharp! I can always ask about something long ago and they always fill me in.
Anyone remember the Old Cove in Webster County? A farmer’s land adjoined it and you could enter it through their barn. That was back then of course; probably grown up now.
Remember the ice plant? And the two movie theaters? Eupora was a busy town. Remember before Diversicare? It got here sometime in the ’70s. According to who you talk to. You could check the records but I love talking to the people.
Eupora was the hub of it all. The biggest town in Webster County. Before they consolidated schools Tomnolen had a school, so did Shady Grove, probably others. Big schools with rivalry in sports, music and other stuff. Each school would try to outdo the other! That still is true today, but competition is great I think.
A lot of communities were around, such as Kilmichael, Grady and Stewart on the west side. Some were also on the other sides spilling into our counties. Remember when Eupora had a train? It ran from Columbus and back in a day! The farmers weren’t to be outdone. They had their own rolling store and a bus called the Doodle Bus.
Here at Diversicare we are snug as a bug in a rug, Rain outside? Not us in here, ha-ha.
Last couple of weeks have been busy here. Monday we had a special guest from Mississippi State. She is writing stories about a few of us and our teenage years growing up in Mississippi. We had fun telling our stories and the fun times we had growing up. Well most of us just talked about working in the fields. It ought to be good; they are going to share our stories to high school students in Mississippi. I’m sure they will find them interesting.
Tuesday Bro. Rob Faulk came and led us in a wonderful time of hymns and fun worship. He even tuned my guitar for me. We thank him so much. He always brings a good show.
On Wednesday I wasn’t feeling well so I had to get on my knees and beg the activity director to call bingo; she agreed this one time. Lol. They even had pizza! Hate I missed that.
Friday I mustered up enough energy to get me a bag of fresh popcorn in the activity room. There is only one thing I like more than a bag of fresh popcorn — two bags of fresh popcorn.
Saturday and Sunday were filled with services by Center Grove, The Jenkins/Woods family, Mills Springs, Maben First Baptist and Harmony Free Will. We appreciate our volunteers greatly!
