Southern Miss went 3-0 to start the season as the Golden Eagles swept Liberty. Despite sweeping the Flames, who won 37 games last year and received an NCAA at-large bid, USM topped at No. 18 in the first week of the major top 25 baseball polls.
Both D1Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball kept USM ranked at No. 18 after listing the Golden Eagles in the same spot in their respective preseason polls. In Perfect Game, USM jumped from No. 25 to No. 20, while in Baseball America, Southern Miss moved from No. 21 to No. 18.
Southern Miss will host New Orleans on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. UNO (1-2), who was 30-23 last year, dropped its opening weekend to Kennesaw State. Then this weekend the Golden Eagles will host Illinois (2-2). The Fighting Illini played in the Wake Forest Tournament this past weekend, where they won two games against Youngstown State and then lost two games to No. 6 Wake Forest.
Friday’s first pitch against Illinois is set for 6 p.m.
