TOWN OF WEIR NATURAL GAS PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAM
OBJECTIVES: 1.) To educate both our customers and non-customers who live and work near our pipelines how to recognize to odor of natural gas and how to respond if they detect possible gas odors. Early recognition of a gas odor and proper response can save lives.
2.) To raise the awareness of the affected public and key state holders of the presence of buried gas pipelines in the communities we serve. A more informed public will also understand that they have a significant role in helping to prevent third-party damage accidents.
3.) To help excavators to understand the steps that they can take to help prevent third-party damage and respond properly if they cause damage to our pipelines.
4.) To help the emergencies agencies that may assist the Town of Weir Natural Gas System in an emergency understand the proper actions to take in responds to a gas release or emergency.
PIPELINE SAFETY- CALL BEFORE YOU DIG!
One of the leading causes of pipeline failures is damage from someone damaging the pipeline is when they’re digging near it. To help reduce the chance of pipeline damage, all states have established one-call notification center and require by that people planning to evacuate call 48 to 78 hours before digging. Simply call 811 to reach the one-call center for their area to ensure their safety. The center will notify the pipeline owners so they can mark their lines. Then the excavator will “know what’s below” and can dig safely. Pipeline markers are used to indicate the “approximate” location of a gas line and to provide contact information.
