After the debacle at Parklane, the County Boys were anxious to get back home and open at their new home. And getting a win would make it just as sweeter.
The Choctaw County Chargers took on the New Hope Trojans at home in Charger Stadium. In the opener, the Chargers struck first when KJ Cork found Chancen Mosley on a 30-yard pass. Mosley’s touchdown was the first touchdown ever scored on the new field. That spark ignited and after that it was all Chargers, all night.
In the second quarter, defensive linebacker Elmar Gladney read the Trojans’s play catching a 55-yard interception, taking the score 25-0. But the PAT by Matthew Coleman was blocked.
New Hope quickly answered back with an 85-yard run from Cameron Mitchell.
But it was quickly answered again by the Chargers on a Cork to Miller combination, making the score 31-7. Coleman’s PAT was no good.
Defense did a quick 1-2 in and out with a fumble recovery by Quay Lowery. Lowery had three solo tackles and one for a one-yard loss. With the ball back in the hands of the Chargers, Cork found Cunningham on a 32-yard pass. This time Coleman’s PAT was good, and the score became 38-7. The Trojans would keep fighting. After the defense pushed the Trojans to a three-and-out, the Trojans returned the favor. Wouldn’t be long before the Chargers returned the favor again. This time the Chargers capitalized on a drive that included Miller, Tayshawn King, and Cunningham but refs would call back Cunningham’s TD, saying he was just out of bounds.
Cork went for another attempt, this time including Savarion Miller, King and ending with Jeramiah Miller putting the nail in the coffin of the Trojans, with a PAT from Coleman, the score went up 45-7 and the clock began to run.
Cork ended the night with 10 completions, 16 attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
Offensively, the Chargers were led by Junior Jeramiah Miller. Miller had 15 rushing attempts for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Quaysie Lane followed with four attempts for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Receiving, Savarion Miller led with three catches for 51 yards. Cunningham and King each had two catches. Cunningham had two catches for 52 yards and King had two catches for 43 yards.
“The ball was spread out very well and that’s when we’re at our best. When everyone is rolling, it’s hard to defend,” Mitchell said. “Jeramiah had a three-touchdown night with 193 yards.”
He said defensively, even though the secondary is young, he feels that played well.
“The defensive line is playing well. We’ve still got to be more disciplined in the secondaryand make sure our eyes are in the right spots,” Mitchell said.
It was noticeable that the Chargers made quite the adjustment after the first week.
“We really just focused on our effort and discipline. We wanted great effort and also to be disciplined for four quarters,” Head Coach Dillon Mitchell said.
And that’s exactly what the Chargers gave.
New Hope wasn’t going down without a fight with two of their scores coming from kickoff returns, one being an 85-yard run from Cameron Mitchell. But, defensively they were held to
20 points.
The Trojans capitalized on the weak side of the Chargers special teams gaining two touchdowns. Mitchell wasn’t too pleased with how his special teams played Friday and said it’s going to be addressed.
“We spend way too much time on special teams to play like that,” Mitchell said.
But, overall, Mitchell said his guys played well and to get the first win ever in the new stadium is a special one.
“I thought they did great. I thought we spread the ball around well offensively, and the defense was physical. We’ve got to do better on special teams,” Mitchell said. “Really wanted to get that first one and open things the right way.”
This week’s game
For the next two weeks, the Chargers are home and this week it’s all about the Hometown Heroes as the Chargers take on Ripley for Homecoming. But Tropical Storm Francine may have a say so in that. At press time Tuesday, Francine had not touched down on Mississippi. But was scheduled to do so by Thursday. Reports state that Francine was set to become a tropical storm by Wednesday.
“Hopefully the weather moves on out Friday morning and clears up. Luckily we have turf so it shouldn’t effect too much. Ripley is always big, physical and well coached. Our defense has to stop the run and we have to be able to hit some big plays. It will be another great test!”
Player of the Week
It’s really no surprise as to who the player of the week for this game is, Junior Jeramiah Miller. As stated in the story, Miller had three touchdowns, 15 rushing attempts for 193 yards. Miller also had one catch for 34 yards. Congratulations Jeramiah!
