The Choctaw County Chargers are continuing their wave and they’re not letting up anytime soon. The County Boys have now improved to 6-1 after a dominating win over the Aberdeen Bulldogs. To some, Aberdeen’s pass game may have shown a bit of weakness in the Chargers but Head Coach Dillon Mitchell doesn’t believe so. “I felt good about this game. I don’t think holes were exposed, I just feel Aberdeen made some good plays. They’ve got some good players and they hit some shots. I thought we could have played better in some spots but overall, we were 56- 18 when we took our starters out and that’s a solid night for us,” Mitchell said. The Chargers walked out of Monroe County with a 56-38 win and their second district win. Chargers struck on the first drive, turning the first quarter into one of the longest quarters – at least it felt that way. KJ Cork went with a Jeramiah Miller/Caleb Cunningham combo finishing with a run by Chavez Sellers and with a PAT by Mathew Coleman, the Chargers went up 7-0. The junior had a big night in Monroe County with Sellers ending the night with four touchdowns, five carries, and 56 yards. “Really can’t ask for much more from them, 56 in two quarters was awesome. We talked this week about getting Chavez going, he is a hidden gem for us and we feel he can make a big impact for us. We didn’t turn the ball over, which was good to see. A few pre-snap penalties I’d like to get rid of but other than that, very pleased,” Mitchell said. And in the first twoquarters of the game, the Chargers dominated. Aberdeen began with a run game but after seeing they couldn’t get anything going, Aberdeen went to the air and proved they are just as athletic. The Chargers defense struggled a bit with the Bulldogs’ passing game but still soldiered through. “They gave us some trouble for sure, they’ve got big athletic receivers that can do that. We’ve just got to do a better job moving our feet and playing the ball in the air. I know they’ll be ready to work to get it fixed,” Mitchell said. But, the Chargers' offense proved it was stronger and continued to power through the first two quarters. The Bulldogs' nail in the coffin was a fumble recovery by Zaylen Patton, which put the Chargers back on offense, and with another added Sellers TD, the Chargers went up 56-18. After the second half, Aberdeen was able to make the score 56-38 but fighting a running clock, they couldn’t mount a full rally against the Chargers. If you were hoping to see the Chargers bust the clock on Aberdeen, Mitchell said that’s not his style. “I don’t really concern myself with consensus outside of our coaching staff. The game was well out of reach, especially with a running clock. I’ll never disrespect an opponent by running a score up and I won’t take unnecessary risks with our guys when a game is out of reach. We’ve got a lot of young guys that work hard and it's great development for them when they get an opportunity to play. The goal is 1-0 each week and that’s all that matters to me,” Mitchell said. This week game This week’s game is for all the marbles – the district marbles that is -- as the Mooreville Troopers are hoping to spoil the Chargers’ Senior Night, just as the Chargers spoiled Aberdeen’s Senior Night as it is the battle of the district undefeated. With Aberdeen and East Webster sitting at one loss each and Nettleton at two losses, if the Chargers are able to get the win against Mooreville they’ll walk out of Charger Stadium District Champs with East Webster, Aberdeen, and Mooreville fighting for the second, third and fourth spot. If not, it’s a race to the finish – and hoping someone loses. “There is a ton riding on this game. If we can’t get up and focus for a game that will give us the Number 1 seed and home-field advantage, then we’re not the team I thought we were. I know our guys will be fired up to practice this week and eager to play Friday,” Mitchell said. Player of the Week It’s no surprise who the player of the week is this week. Junior Chavez Sellers had a big game Friday night against Aberdeen accounting for four of the Chargers' touchdowns by himself. Sellers finished with five carries for 56 yards and four touchdowns! Congratulations Chavez!
