During their monthly board meeting, the Choctaw County School Board Trustees discussed the district’s cell phone policy. The discussion began during their June monthly meeting and continued into the July board meeting. The question was raised about whether or not to include Choctaw County High School’s phone safe zones in the policy. The current policy states that phones are not to be used anywhere on campus while students are in school. “Mr. Catchot has a phone safe zone area, and they can use them in the hallway and the cafeteria," Superintendent Glen Beard said. “But the issue is that all the teachers don’t enforce the rule,” Board President Mike Thomas said. “And we can’t really make them.” “Oh, yes there is a way we can make them enforce the rules,” Trustee Clint Huffman said. The board agreed that when it came to the classroom, it was on the teacher to enforce the rule and wanted it to be pushed for the teacher to do so. Beard said when CCHS and CCJHS has its teacher/staff meeting before school starts, he’ll send a directive to make sure that it’s enforced. The board decided to leave the policy as is, voting to approve it along with policies on school district legal status, authority, transfers and withdrawals of students, administrative personnel promotions, administrative personnel compensation guides, and contract and administrative personnel hiring.
