Legion State Park is receiving some help with much-needed maintenance from a five- member team from AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corp), who will be working in the park for several days.
The main focus of their work will be on painting the five cabins which date back to the days of the Great Depression.
This past Monday morning, before work began, the team was greeted and welcomed by Louisville Mayor Will Hill, Mike Dowd, and Winston County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Alexander.
AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential team-based program for men and women ages 18–24. Members serve at one of four regional campuses located throughout the United States (Vicksburg, MS; Vinton, IA; Aurora/Denver, CO; and Sacramento, CA). Each campus focuses efforts on states within its region but may travel to other areas in response to national crises. The team working at Legion has been together for almost ten months as is nearing the end of their service term.
Legion State Park Manager, Tim Flake, stated that there is an application process on the park-level, and state-level that helped to bring the AmeriCorps team to Winston County. He added that they are in hopes that the weather will hold out through the week and painting on all five cabins can be completed. The team will be residing in those park cabins during their stay.
