Gene attended Weir High School in Weir, MS and later worked for MS Valley Gas Company for more than 25 years. He served in many capacities through the years, including Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Bethlehem Baptist Church. His gift was hospitality; he made everyone "feel right at home." He never met a stranger. He loved being with people and people loved being with him. Gene will be remembered as a man who gave people much joy with his sense of humor-he always made people laugh. He enjoyed working in his garden, fishing and football games. Above all , he always enjoyed being with his family and taking very good care of them. His wife Freida of 56 years was absolutely the love of his life She took excellent care of him, staying by his side, becoming his nurse and tireless caregiver. Two of his favorite songs were "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and "I Saw the Light." He sang both of these often during his last months. Even though we say "good-bye for the moment," we know we will see him again. The family request memorials be made to the Alzeheimer's Association. Oliver Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements. You may go online and sign our guest register or leave a message of condolence for the family at www.ofheupora.com
