Inky black sky with mounds of stars and other things flying around…6 a.m. for my walk. But the 32 degrees made it a bit shorter even with a sweater! But oh, my so beautiful. The trees turning and there are so many reds and golds to be seen. Most of you have something growing outside a window…what color is it? Big or small? Something that comes every year…or begins to fade out about now?
Astros are winning at the moment. Who knows where it went by today? Maybe San Diego is winning? Who knows. Could be an interesting World Series.
I found a couple of humorous little tales I think will bring a smile…
“A police recruit was asked during a training session, ‘what would you do if you had to arrest your mother?’ He answered, ‘Call for backup.’”
“A Sunday school teacher asked why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied: ‘they couldn’t get a babysitter.’”
“An elderly woman died last month. Having never married she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for the memorial service she wrote: ‘they wouldn’t take me out while I was alive, and I don’t want them to take me out when I’m dead!’ ”
Just a little smile? These days are difficult for so many folks. Equally these are times to be created and remembered. Soon it’s voting time and despite all the angst on TV and elsewhere…just get out there and gitter ‘er done! Participation is no small thing, and we can see from the many turns in history how things can get in the way. You might be interested in this. See if you can guess who said it.
“If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation…In the code of new laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the Ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” (Abigail Adams, wife of the 2nd President, March 31, 1776, in a letter to husband, John). Or. “Even if the right to vote brought to women no better work, no better pay, no better conditions in any way, she should have it for her own self-respect and to compel man’s respect for her.” (Susan B. Anthony, Suffragist 1869).
On the other hand, Grover Cleveland, 22nd President, in 1905 said: “Sensible and responsible women do not want to vote.” Really?
Finally on the topic: “People who do not vote have no line of credit with people who are elected.” (Marian Wright Edelman, lawyer, 1987). The beat goes on. Remember NOVEMBER 8.
Trunk or Treat has become the safe and fun way over the past few years for the littlest specially to dress up and have a night out. Clowns, super-heroes, and even a ghost or two hurry from truck to tiny car wondering what they might get for their bags. All Hallows Eve reminds us of the finality of life here on earth…and we laugh in its face, knowing somehow that the promises made in the Christian tradition will win out. El Día de la Muertos (Day of the Dead) follows and in Hispanic cultures is another way to honor ancestors, to focus again on the everlasting not the temporary.
BLESSINGS.
