The first meeting of a new term for the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors, held on Monday, January 6, was called to order by Chancery Clerk Steve Montgomery, in accordance with state law as the term of the Board officers had expired.
During their first meeting of 2020, on Tuesday January 7, the Ackerman Board of Aldermen dealt with several routine matters, including:
• A 5-0 vote to approve a contract for fire protection between the Town of Ackerman and Choctaw County.
An employee of the landmark Ackerman establishment has been arrested for thefts amounting to $5K. According to Ackerman Police Chief Tim Cook, Savanah Hall, a cook at the iconic restaurant, was placed under arrest this past Monday and a bond of $5K was set.
Christopher Edwards, a white male in his early-20s, was placed under arrest this past Tuesday for trying to pass a counterfeit bill in Ackerman. The incident took place about three weeks ago when Edwards, a Starkville resident, attempted to pass a $100 bill at the Ackerman Dollar General.
Per an interlocal agreement between Choctaw County and the Town of Ackerman, approved by the Mississippi State Attorney General’s Office, the County will assume the responsibility for the collection of all city ad valorem taxes within the Town of Ackerman, on real, personal property, public utilities assessments and city privilege licenses.
The annual Holiday Open House was held this past Thursday at the Choctaw County Library and featured holiday entertainment and festively decorated Christmas trees.
The culinary arts department of the CCCTC provided hot chocolate, the CCHS Band Boosters held a bake sale, and Santa was on hand for pictures with the kids.
During their meeting of Monday, December 9, the Choctaw County School Board honored the 2019-2020 Teachers of the Year and Paraprofessionals of the Year.
The Council House Restaurant, in French Camp, held its official grand opening this past Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony which was attended by a large crowd of Choctaw County residents.
During their last scheduled meeting of 2019, held on Tuesday, December 3, the Ackerman Board of Aldermen took up several routine matters including:
• A 5-0 vote to approve Renasant Bank to handle bank depositories.
