Half a dozen men are applying for the job of Webster County sheriff, which drew the largest number of candidates in this year’s local elections.
The 2019 qualifying period for county and state offices officially closed Friday. Party primaries are Aug. 6 with runoffs Aug. 27 and the general election Nov. 5.
Heavy rain and flash floods damaged homes and washed out roads throughout the county last week.
Two homes and multiple roads in Webster County were damaged from flooding that started Feb. 19, according to initial assessments from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
The Webster County Board of Supervisors investigated options for roadside litter pickup during a recessed meeting Thursday.
The board has expressed concerns at previous meetings about the litter problem on county roads and broached the topic again last week with Acting Sheriff Andy McCants.
